What the words mean, in Schneider Electric’s own terms: discontinued is the end of commercialization, the last date it accepts an offer for that reference, while after-sales services (repair, spare parts) continue until its end of life. Past end of service, plan the replacement; GDF keeps servicing the unit in the meantime.
Servicing a Galaxy: what a visit covers
Online when the load is critical
On the maintenance bypass, the Galaxy VS manual describes the load as supplied with unprotected power from bypass. GDF prefers online maintenance for critical loads and plans any bypass work with you.
Event log and alarms
The display and event log come first: outages, transfers, faults and the last self-test. For bypass alarms on a Galaxy VS, see Galaxy VS bypass errors and essential tests.
Batteries
String float voltage, block voltage and internal resistance, with battery temperature, and a look for swelling, acid and corrosion.
Firmware and commissioning
Firmware updates where they apply, with the event logs checked after maintenance (firmware updates on APC Symmetra and Galaxy), and start-up of new or replacement units (commissioning a Galaxy).
Discontinued frames
Galaxy work in GDF’s database covers 20 threads and 17 quotes. On older frames, parts get scarce: plan the replacement while the unit is still serviceable.
Replacement
Schneider Electric names a Galaxy V successor for most of the parts above. GDF also quotes XPC, a certified partner, as a replacement, sized to the measured load. See replacing a discontinued three-phase UPS.
A Galaxy 3500 at end of support: one site
At a municipal water treatment plant in the Montreal region, the annual PM found an APC Galaxy 3500 / Smart-UPS VT of 20 kVA, a model discontinued in 2021 and no longer serviced by the manufacturer since 2023, according to the GDF report for that unit. Its 5-year-old batteries were degrading and losing acid, and a network card was installed but not connected. The recommendation: replace the batteries without delay, connect the card for alerts, and plan the replacement of the frame.
Questions about APC Galaxy service
Do you service APC Galaxy UPS in Canada?
Yes: current Galaxy VS, VL, VX and VXL systems and discontinued Galaxy 3500, 5000, 7000 and VM frames. The line is open 24/7 at 514-252-8324.
My Galaxy 3500 is discontinued. Can it still be serviced?
Schneider Electric’s Canadian range page now reads “Limited stock exists” and points to the Galaxy VS range for replacements. GDF still maintains these units and replaces their batteries; plan the frame replacement in parallel.
What is the difference between discontinued and end of service?
Discontinued is the end of commercialization, the last date Schneider Electric accepts an offer for that reference. After-sales services such as repair and spare parts continue until its end of life. Many part pages also give an end-of-service date.
What replaces a Galaxy 5000, 7000 or VM?
On se.com Canada: Galaxy VS 80 kW for the MGE Galaxy 5000 80 kVA, the Galaxy VL range for the MGE Galaxy 7000 500 kVA, and Galaxy VX 500 kVA for the Galaxy VM 160 kVA parallel unit. Check your own part number.
Can a Galaxy be maintained without dropping the load?
GDF prefers online maintenance for critical loads, which keeps the load protected. On the maintenance bypass the load is fed with unprotected power, so bypass work on critical loads is planned with you.
How fast can a technician reach a Galaxy site?
Rapid dispatch: 1 to 3 h in the Montreal area, same day in Quebec City, Toronto and Ottawa, and 24 to 48 hours elsewhere in Canada. Call 514-252-8324 at any hour.
Galaxy in alarm, or due for service?
Send the model, the part number from the nameplate and the alarm. You receive a written quote within 4 business hours.
