Topology, battery cartridge and load margin set the refurbishment limit
The SMT3000RM2U is a 3 kVA, 2700 W, 120 V line-interactive rack UPS whose suitability depends on the application rather than its age label alone. Equipment record: APC SMT3000RM2U, companion identifier RBC43. Decision: Retain a refurbished SMT3000RM2U only when the line-interactive topology suits the load, the unit passes electrical and battery checks, and the protected watts leave an explicit margin below 2700 W.
The load, not the purchase category
A refurbished UPS is not equivalent to a factory-new online UPS simply because both labels show 3 kVA. The SMT3000RM2U uses line-interactive voltage regulation and a finite SmartSlot and battery architecture. A replacement comparison must begin with the disturbance the load must ride through, the actual watts, the required runtime and the availability of a maintained battery and communications path.
For APC SMT3000RM2U, the applicability boundary is anchored to 3000 VA, 2700 W and part RBC43. One worked input remains an assumption until it is recorded at the equipment.

SMT3000RM2U electrical limits
The controlling numerical record is: Apparent-power rating: 3000 VA; Real-power rating: 2700 W; Nominal input and output: 120 V; Rack height: 2 U; Output receptacle count: 8 receptacles; Worked protected load: 1620 W. Each value has a defined source or assumption status in the engineering ledger. Values from different configurations are not combined as though they came from one installed system.
| Engineering parameter | Value | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|
| Apparent-power rating | 3000 VA | Published OEM value |
| Real-power rating | 2700 W | Published OEM value |
| Nominal input and output | 120 V | Published OEM value |
| Rack height | 2 U | Published OEM value |
| Output receptacle count | 8 receptacles | Published OEM value |
| Worked protected load | 1620 W | Worked design assumption |
The worked 1,620 W load is 60 percent of the 2,700 W real-power rating and leaves 1,080 W of nameplate headroom. That arithmetic does not prove battery runtime or transient response. It only establishes that a 2,700 W ceiling is not being treated as a normal operating target.
A 40 percent operating margin example
The worked check uses load percentage = 1,620 W / 2,700 W; headroom = 2,700 W – 1,620 W. With a worked 1,620 W load and the published 2,700 W rating, the result is 60% loading and 1,080 W headroom. The margin permits a controlled test, but it does not make a line-interactive UPS suitable for a load that requires zero transfer time. The arithmetic is reproducible, but it remains a design check until the listed inputs are confirmed at the equipment.
The 60% loading and 1,080 W headroom result follows from load percentage = 1,620 W / 2,700 W; headroom = 2,700 W – 1,620 W. If the 1620 W input changes, this check is repeated rather than carrying the earlier result into a different operating state.

Refurbishment checks that cannot be cosmetic
Refurbishment begins with inspection of connectors, fan path, relays, capacitors, display, event log and the installed RBC43. A fresh battery cannot correct a charger fault, heat-damaged connection or transfer relay that does not operate within specification.
The load determines whether line-interactive topology remains acceptable. A sensitive process that cannot tolerate transfer, a 208 V requirement or a need for scalable external runtime changes the solution class even when the SMT3000RM2U passes its bench tests.
The acceptance record needs serial traceability, battery date, charge state, no-load and loaded output, transfer observation, self-test result and a bounded discharge point. Cosmetic condition and an LCD showing 100 percent are not capacity evidence.
| Path | Technical consequence | Disposition |
|---|---|---|
| Apply the stated engineering decision | Retain a refurbished SMT3000RM2U only when the line-interactive topology suits the load, the unit passes electrical and battery checks, and the protected watts leave an explicit margin below 2700 W. | Selected basis |
| Generic model substitution | Select by family name or rating alone, without confirming the exact configuration. | Not selected on the stated evidence |
| Unverified operating assumption | Treat a design assumption as though it were a site measurement. | Reconsider only if the input changes |

The APC SMT3000RM2U decision retains part RBC43, the 60% loading and 1,080 W headroom calculation result and the manufacturer-published 3000 VA point in one equipment record. Applicable OEM instructions, qualified electrical authority and the installed single-line or wiring record remain controlling for any executable work.
Load-bank and battery acceptance
Acceptance of APC SMT3000RM2U depends on five recorded checks:
- Verify SMT3000RM2U and RBC43 compatibility from the OEM record.
- Inspect power connections, cooling path, relays and internal condition before energizing.
- Apply the worked 1,620 W load or the approved site load and record output behaviour.
- Observe line-to-battery transfer and return without a protected-load reset.
- Document battery date, recharge state and the agreed discharge endpoint.
The APC SMT3000RM2U record is not accepted if part RBC43 does not match, the calculation does not reproduce 60% loading and 1,080 W headroom, or the final operating state is not recorded. The equipment returns to the approved safe state when a check stops, and the unresolved condition remains open without an invented repair result.

Conditions that end the refurbishment path
The SMT3000RM2U remains a defensible refurbished option for a compatible 120 V load when the unit and RBC43 pass electrical and battery acceptance. Online replacement becomes the technical choice when topology, voltage, runtime, monitoring support or condition falls outside that boundary.
GDF’s UPS service page covers field measurements and service work for APC SMT3000RM2U.
Decision rule: Retain a refurbished SMT3000RM2U only when the line-interactive topology suits the load, the unit passes electrical and battery checks, and the protected watts leave an explicit margin below 2700 W. A different model, load, voltage, battery string, software version or operating state requires a new check against the applicable manufacturer record.
