24/7 emergency UPS service in Canada: bypass, critical alarms and what happens on arrival

GDF Technologies answers UPS emergencies 24/7 at 514-252-8324, on APC, Eaton, Vertiv, Tripp Lite and other brands. Rapid emergency dispatch: a technician is on site within 1 to 3 h in the Montreal area, the same day in Quebec City, Toronto and Ottawa, and within 24 to 48 hours elsewhere. While you wait, keep people away from a battery that smells, and do not turn off a UPS on bypass.

Call first: 514-252-8324, 24/7

One line, day and night. How fast a technician can be on site is one of the questions customers ask most: up to 51 threads in GDF’s work database (mailbox and support line, which can overlap) ask it. The answer:

  • 1 to 3 h on site in the Montreal area (rapid emergency dispatch).
  • Same day in Quebec City, Toronto and Ottawa.
  • Within 24 to 48 hours elsewhere in Canada.
  • A written quote within 4 business hours for the repair, once we have the details.

Have this ready when you call: the model and serial number, the rating in kVA, photos of the display and of the nameplate, and the alarm or code shown.

What to do while you wait (safe actions only)

  • A battery that smells of rotten eggs (sulphur): leave the room, ventilate it and keep people out. GDF’s field reports treat a sulphur smell from VRLA batteries as a reason to isolate and ventilate, and isolating the strings is the technician’s job. APC’s Back-UPS Pro manual warns of a risk of hydrogen sulphide gas and excessive smoke, and battery maker Power-Sonic notes that thermal runaway can destroy a battery in as little as a few hours.
  • A battery over-temperature alarm or a visible electrolyte leak: APC’s Back-UPS Pro manual says to replace the battery immediately and not to operate the UPS until the batteries have been replaced. Call the line; the technician isolates and replaces them.
  • A UPS on bypass: do not turn it off. On bypass the equipment is powered but not protected by the UPS (Eaton), and turning off a UPS in bypass mode cuts power to the connected load (Vertiv). If utility power fails during bypass, the UPS shuts down and no output is supplied to the load (Vertiv).
  • Input breaker tripped on a plug-in APC Smart-UPS SMT: Schneider Electric’s checklist says to reduce the load, disconnect nonessential equipment and reset the circuit breaker.
  • An internal fault on a Smart-UPS SMT: Schneider Electric says not to attempt to use the UPS: unplug it and have it serviced immediately.
  • Do not open cabinets or touch battery connections. The technician isolates the battery breaker and the DC strings before any battery work.

What the technician does on arrival

  1. Checks access, protective equipment, electrical hazards and clearance, and looks for leaks, dust and ventilation problems.
  2. Reads the display and the event log: outages, transfers, faults, the last self-test.
  3. Makes the load safe: when the work needs it, moves the load to the maintenance bypass with no interruption, and isolates the battery strings before any battery work.
  4. Measures input, output and load per phase, and inspects the batteries for swelling, acid at the vents and corrosion.
  5. Repairs, or secures the site and plans the repair. The UPS goes back to normal with no active alarm, and you receive a written report with readings, photos and the next steps. See UPS repair service in Canada.

When a UPS goes to bypass

A UPS goes to bypass when an overload or a fault has occurred, or a command has been received (Eaton). The load stays powered from the utility but is no longer protected: in a single-module UPS, a transfer to bypass leaves the critical load unprotected (Eaton).

It is not rare. In 150 written GDF service reports, 9% found a UPS transferred to, or stuck on, bypass, and GDF staff wrote about it in 24 mail threads. In one case below, an end-of-life battery string dragging the DC bus left a 300 kVA UPS on static bypass for two months.

A maintenance bypass is the path a technician uses to work on the UPS while the load stays fed. On it, the load gets unprotected power from bypass (Schneider Electric, Galaxy VS), so work on critical loads is preferably done online. For when bypass is normal and when it is critical, see bypass on a UPS: what to check on site; when the bypass itself is the problem, see the maintenance bypass, not the UPS, was the real problem.

Emergencies from the field

  • Sulphur odour, building evacuated. At a municipal building in southwestern Ontario, the fire department had evacuated the building after a sulphur odour from an Eaton 9155 (8 kVA, about 160 sealed VRLA blocks). The technician moved the load to the maintenance bypass with no interruption, isolated the strings, removed about 20 cartridges and inspected for arcing or fire damage: none, as the flame-retardant cases had contained the event. The cause was end-of-life batteries venting in thermal runaway; nine days later 112 new blocks were installed and charging verified.
  • Two months on static bypass. A 300 kVA Mitsubishi 9900B at a food plant in southern Ontario had been on static bypass for two months, since an inverter overcurrent code was logged, and both battery breakers were found tripped. An end-of-life battery string was dragging the DC bus down. The technicians installed 80 new blocks and planned a cold restart during a shutdown window, with an inverter diagnosis.
  • A 17-year-old battery bank. At an industrial site in Ontario, a 150 kVA Mitsubishi at 400 V shut down after a complete battery bank failure: 80 blocks about 17 years old, with melted cases and lead plates at the bottom of the cabinet; the event logs confirmed the batteries failed. The recommendation: immediate battery replacement and a full inspection before restart.

Frequently asked questions

How fast can a technician be on site for an emergency?

Call 514-252-8324 at any hour. Rapid emergency dispatch: 1 to 3 h on site in the Montreal area; Quebec City, Toronto and Ottawa: the same day. Anywhere else in Canada: 24 to 48 hours.

Why did my UPS go to bypass, and is the load protected?

A UPS goes to bypass after an overload, a fault or a command. On bypass the equipment is powered but not protected by the UPS, so a utility failure during bypass becomes an outage. Call us to find the cause.

My UPS batteries smell like rotten eggs. What should I do?

Leave the room, ventilate it, keep people out and call the 24/7 line. A sulphur smell from VRLA batteries means isolate and ventilate; the technician isolates the strings. Do not touch the batteries or their connections.

Should we turn the UPS off?

Not when it is on bypass: turning off a UPS in bypass mode cuts power to the connected load. For a plug-in unit that reports an internal fault, the maker’s instruction is to stop using it, unplug it and have it serviced.

Can the work be done at night or on a weekend?

Yes. The line is open 24/7, and repairs can be scheduled in the evening or on a weekend.

What should we have ready when we call?

The model and serial number, the rating in kVA, photos of the display and the nameplate, and the alarm or code shown.

Which brands do you service in an emergency?

The brands in GDF’s work records include APC by Schneider Electric, Eaton and older Powerware units, Liebert by Vertiv, Tripp Lite, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Delta and XPC, among others; GDF is a certified partner of XPC and Delta.
