RFC 1628 object scaling and a 300-second host sequence controlled the test
A live SNMP walk can expose status, estimated minutes remaining and seconds-on-battery, but the object units must be interpreted before they drive a shutdown action. From OID value to shutdown authority
The UPS card, management host and shutdown agent form one timed control chain. A correct OID with the wrong scale can move a trigger by a factor of 60. A correct trigger can still fail if virtual machines, databases and the physical host stop in the wrong order.

Three objects and two time scales

Seven minutes equals 420 seconds. Subtracting a 300-second stop sequence and a 60-second reserve leaves 60 seconds for detection, polling and command launch. Two 30-second polls consume that allowance exactly, so any slower poll or longer stop sequence fails the worked design.
The 420-second shutdown budget
The worked check uses detection allowance = 7 min x 60 – 300 s shutdown – 60 s reserve. With seven minutes remaining, a 300-second stop and a 60-second reserve, the result is 60 seconds, equal to two 30-second polls. The trigger cannot be delayed beyond two polls without reducing the reserve or requiring more confirmed runtime. The arithmetic is reproducible, but it remains a design check until the listed inputs are confirmed at the equipment.
The 60 seconds, equal to two 30-second polls result follows from detection allowance = 7 min x 60 – 300 s shutdown – 60 s reserve. If the 30 s input changes, this check is repeated rather than carrying the earlier result into a different operating state.

Object semantics before automation
The walk record stores the raw OID, returned value, syntax, scale and interpreted engineering unit. Estimated minutes remaining is not silently converted to seconds in one tool while another tool treats the raw number as seconds.
Shutdown is tested against a non-production or approved maintenance load. The record captures trigger time, agent receipt, application stop, operating-system halt and UPS state. Each stage needs a timestamp from a synchronized clock.
Restart is tested separately. Utility return can precede safe application restart, and an automatic UPS restart does not prove that network, storage and authentication dependencies are available. The restart owner approves the ordered recovery.

Shutdown remains disabled until the timeline passes
The 300-second shutdown is acceptable only if the walk continues to provide at least seven confirmed minutes and the two-poll trigger completes within 60 seconds. Any longer detection or stop time requires a higher trigger threshold.
