Signs your UPS battery needs replacing
- A « Replace Battery » indicator or a flashing battery icon on the display.
- Repeated beeping or intermittent alarms, even with no power outage.
- Collapsed runtime: the UPS now holds for seconds where it used to hold for minutes.
- A UPS older than 3 to 5 years that has never had a battery replacement.
- Swollen or hot batteries, address these immediately.
How long does a UPS battery last?
A typical VRLA (sealed lead-acid) battery lasts 3 to 5 years. In Canada, two things shorten that: cold winters and, at the other extreme, the heat of server rooms. Every sustained rise above 25 °C (77 °F) can roughly halve battery life. The only reliable way to know a battery’s true condition is an annual impedance test.
